After a long stretch of dark winter months, longer days and sunshine is enough to make someone shout with happiness. The sun means summertime, lighter days, and fun. But, sunshine can also mean skin damage, and, worse, deadly skin conditions.

To protect your skin, it is important to wear sunscreen. Only, sunscreen doesn't last all day long. Sunscreen has to be reapplied regularly throughout the day, though knowing when to reapply (and remembering!) is difficult to do. That's where a new Kickstarter project comes into play. UVeBand tells you when you need to slather on more sunscreen.

How UVeBand Works

Essentially, UVeBand is a slap bracelet. It's a thin and thick bracelet that comes in six different colours. To put the bracelet on, all you have to do is slap it against your wrist, but here's where this bracelet differs from all others. Inside of the bracelet is a UV-detecting chip. When those rays become too high, the bracelet gently vibrates, and this lets you know that it's time to reapply that sunscreen.

To use the bracelet, all you have to do is apply sunscreen, put the bracelet on, and let it do its thing. The UVeBand is solar powered, recharges on its own, and shuts off when you aren't wearing it. Not only is this bracelet important for adults, but it's also a great way to tell if your kids are wearing enough sunscreen.

Funding Is Needed

As mentioned, the UVeBand is currently a Kickstarter project. In order to reach its goal, the company has to raise 80,000 UK Pounds -- that's a lot of dough. So far, the company has raised only 4,504 UK Pounds.

In short, the company has a long way to go before the goal is reached. Amazingly, this bracelet hasn't received a ton of press, though it should really be on the top of most people's minds. Why? Skin cancer and wrinkles are no laughing matter.

So, if you want to protect your skin, protect your child's skin, and help fight cancer, make sure to donate to the current UVeBand fund. This company's website can be found on the Kickstarter main page.

With each donation level comes a number of different items including your own bracelet. It's a great thing to play in the sun, but it's also a dangerous thing. The sun's rays are harsh, and we simply do not apply enough sunscreen to protect us from the sun.

Preorder Your Bracelet

You can currently pre-order your own UVeBand bracelet from Kickstarter for around $11. The company plans to start shipping bracelets in July of 2013. A mere $11 to protect yourself from skin cancer is a great investment, in my book. You might get a watch tan from the UVeBand, but that's a small price to pay for avoiding wrinkles and all kinds of other bad thing.

Of course, there's also the sunscreen debate to keep in mind. If you're completely against sunscreen, the UVeBand won't do much for you. But, in that case, the only other way to avoid the sun is to stay indoors, and who wants to do that?
