Other programs will teach you all the basics. Deciding on the right program really depends on the type of learning style that you’re aiming for.

Jamorama -- $40+

Jamorama is an immensely popular program. Downloading Jamorama only takes a few minutes, your system won’t be compromised, and you won’t have to go through a thousand different feature selections. Unlike other programs, Jamorama is actually a collection of many different programs. Included in the Jamorama fee are audio and video files, eBooks, games, and other items. You will have to pay a membership fee in order to access these items.

Guitar basics are covered with Jamorama including sight-reading skills, chord identification lessons, and pitch help. You will also have access to the Jamorama website, which is packed with helpful details. If you’re looking for teaching software that doubles as recording software, Jamorama isn’t the choice for you. This program doesn’t allow you to record or playback any records. However, Jamorama will teach you all the guitar basics that you need to know, and you will have access to a world of different tools.

Teach Yourself to Play Guitar -- $20+

Alfred’s Music Publishing Company has been around for decades. In fact, books published by Alfred’s are often the first books that beginner musicians purchase. Recently, Alfred’s has stepped into the Internet age by developing easy to use software. Really, the name of this program says it all. Teach Yourself to Play Guitar is the full software package.

This program includes everything that you will need to know in order to starting strumming and picking. From learning how to read music to understanding different chords and frets, Teach Yourself to Play Guitar is the only program you’ll ever need – unless you happen to be left-handed. Unfortunately, Alfred’s Teach Yourself to Play Guitar doesn’t consider those people who are left-handed. Aside from this drawback, the newest addition to the Alfred’s lineup is a solid one that can be purchased for a low price.

Action Tab -- $9

Action Tab is a bit different from all the other programs listed in this article. Action Tab won’t teach you how to play the guitar, but it will teach you how to play and read tabs. If your only concern is learning all about tabs, then this is the program for you. Action Tab assumes that you know about chords and other basics, which makes it an ideal program for intermediate guitar players. There are various version of Action Tab encompassing many different music genres.
