Most people will never need a 6TB hard drive. But those who run a company might. If you need a drive that can hold more than the average, it’s hard to think of a better option than the Western Digital My Book Studio Edition 6TB drive. This mammoth drive is big both in storage and in physical size. This is not a drive for your desktop. This is not a drive for those who want something sleek and slim. It is, however, a drive that you’ll be glad to have in your corner if you need a drive that’s larger than most. I’m calling this one the “dinosaur of all hard drives” – with good reason.

Inside the Western Digital My Book Studio Drive

As you might imagine, a drive that’s this big (measuring 6.54 X 3.87 H/W) comes with a lot of inputs and outputs. Western Digital has equipped the My Book Studio with FireWire 800 ports (possible to daisy chain); micro USB 2.0 port, and an eSATA port. In short, you will have enough ports to handle pretty much anything you want to connect. You might even have too many ports. The only thing lacking here is USB 3.0. It also has a configurable RAID scheme, which might be something worth noting.
How the My Book Studio Performs

What good is a massive dinosaur drive if it doesn’t perform well? During tests, the My Book Studio was very fast, indeed. The speed of this drive is mostly due to the eSATA interface, which is capable of transferring very large files within seconds. There’s no doubt that this drive is as impressive as it looks. If you have lots of large files that need to be transferred within the blink of an eye, I can’t think of another drive that can perform quite as well and is this big.

In Conclusion

Ultimately, the Western Digital My Book Studio is a massive, impressive, and fast drive. You’ll find all the ports you need, plenty of space (6TB is nothing to laugh at), and a drive that’s entirely efficient. If price is your concern, I’m also quite impressed that this drive is actually affordable. At $ 499, this isn’t the cheapest drive on the market, but this is still a really great price for a drive that’s as large as this one is. How often do you find a 6TB drive that’s priced less than $800? If you take a look around the Internet, you’ll be hard pressed to find a drive this big, with this many features, that’s less than $800.

After a quick price scan, I’ve also found that the My Book Studio drive can be purchased for less than $499 through select websites. If you’re able to find this drive at a low price, and you need all of that space, make sure to pounce. With everything that this drive includes, it will be hard to find a better drive for the same price. That said, unless you have lots of files to transfer, you probably don’t need more than 1TB. So, make sure that you need a drive this big before you spend $500 – most people will never fill the space that this drive allots!
