What do you do if you want to find out about someone you have just met, are about to meet, or know? Chances are, you “Google” that person and pull up a bunch of public records detailing someone’s name, address, phone number, and other bits and pieces of information. These records have always been public, though the Internet makes it even easier to find out about someone quite anonymously. Most people who search for details about someone else are doing so without any malicious intentions, but then there are those who simply want to steal a person’s identity.

Whether the intent behind searching for someone’s information is fraud or not, it’s still somewhat frightening to think that anyone can find out all about you, isn’t it? Well, there’s a new site called SafeShepherd that wants to make the Internet a whole lot safer for everyone by allowing users to remove personal details from certain public record websites. Sound like a service you’re interested in? Here’s why you may want to take a close look at what SafeShepherd has to offer.

Using The SafeShepherd Site

When you first visit the SafeShepherd site, you will notice that there’s a “sign up for free” button on the page. If you click on that link, you will be asked to enter your name or to sign up using Facebook. I’ve tested the Facebook signup and the usual permissions apply, but this link did work seamlessly. After just a few moments, SafeShepherd will conduct a search using your full name. SafeShepherd will pull up as many sites as the site can find (in my case it was six), or up to fifteen sites for free.

To remove your details from any site, all you have to do is click the “Block This Record” button that is located next to each site listed. Once that button has been clicked, SafeShepherd will work to remove your information. The site states that a notification will be sent to you via email once your details have been removed from selected sites. This is what you’ll get if you sign up for SafeShepherd for a free account. If you want all year protection (or to have the site remove your name from any other website), you will have to pay $14 per month or $5.42 per month for an annual membership.

Some Potential Problems

SafeShepherd is a great site and provides an effective way to remove your information from a number of sites that list your details for the world to see. There’s really no reason not to give the free version of this service a try. However, signing up for a yearly or monthly membership might or might not serve you well. Really, it all depends on how many sites SafeShepherd is able to search. Still, it makes a great deal of sense to remove your information from the Internet if you have kids or simply don’t want to be bothered. Also, if you’ve ever been a victim of identity theft, you know just how much of a hassle this kind of fraud can be and SafeShepherd can prevent these issues from occurring in part.
