Spotify is great. It’s great at the gym. It’s great while riding a bike. It’s great when you want to tune out co-workers. What’s not so great about Spotify is that you can’t control it very well if you have an iPhone -- well, you can’t control it hands-free, anyway.

If you have an iPhone and you want to listen to Spotify in the car without looking down to change tunes or browse for songs (and potentially cause a major accident), there is something that you can do to make Siri communicate with Spotify.

Assistant+

So first you’re going to need an app called Assistant+. This app is available through the Apple app store for $1.99. Assistant does all kinds of cool things like let help make Siri more accessible and easier to use, help you control your iPhone better, create settings that will make your life simpler, and many other things.

Even if you don’t use it for anything else, you’ll need Assistant+ in order to download the next necessary app that will connect Siri with Spotify. So go download Assistant+ now. Once that’s done, you’ll have to download SpotifySiriControls.

Spotify Siri Controls

This app acts just like it sounds. It helps you control Spotify using Siri. The app works with Assistant+. It really should be as simple as that. Once you have both apps downloaded, you should be able to tell Siri what songs you want to play. Just make sure you are specific when you tell Siri what you want to do.

Saying, ‘Siri, play Massive Attack on Spotify’ should work, but if you tell Siri to just play Massive Attack, Siri will look for that name in your iTunes lineup (where it probably isn’t located). Once all of that has been done, you will be able to happily play Spotify songs using Siri (so not by looking at your phone while you drive).

Other Hands Free Options

The other thing that you can do if you don’t want to mess around with a few apps is to download a playlist on Spotify. If you are a Spotify subscriber, you can listen to any playlist that you have downloaded wherever you are. This does mean that you will have to create a playlist of songs you may want to listen to while driving, but it’s one way to simplify listening to Spotify hands-free.

Many modern cars have Wi-Fi built in, and this makes it simpler to listen to Spotify and all the songs that it comes with, but it doesn’t change the fact that Siri can’t communicate with the streaming service. You can go through the hacks listed above as well, but those are somewhat cumbersome. For now, though, these are the best ways to listen to Spotify hands-free while driving.

Some newer cars are also equipped to allow things like Spotify control, but if you don’t have a newer car the best option is to use the hacks listed above. Do you know of some other ways to listen to Spotify without looking at your phone? Let me know!
