It’s impossible to know just how much your iPhone means to you until it is gone. Unfortunately, lots of things can happen to iPhones. Your phone could be lost, stolen, or you could wind up with an irreplaceable cracked screen. If any of these things happen, you will not be able to retrieve important data once your phone has been wiped clean.

Fortunately, like everything that Apple does, it’s easy to backup your iPhone data. Amazingly, most people don’t backup important photos, details, and contacts regularly. This could be because some people don’t know how simple the backup process is. It could also be because most people aren’t aware of how much they’ll miss if a phone becomes wiped out or stolen.

A Note About Screens

The iPhone 3GS has a screen that can be replaced. Word on the street is that the iPhone 4S also has a screen that can be replaced. Sadly, the iPhone 4, which many people today have, has a screen that cannot be replaced. This screen is fused directly to the phone’s motherboard, which means that the only way to replace this screen is to switch your phone for a new one.

Of course, once you wipe out your existing phone by pressing that scary red button, everything that you have on your phone right now will be lost. Photos, contact information, data, apps, everything will be gone. Now, if you spent the time to update and backup your phone, you won’t have to worry about losing all of this vital information. So, that brings us to the backup process – and you won’t believe how easy it is.

The Backup Process

I told you that Apple makes it simple to backup your data, right? Well, all you really have to do is plug your phone into your computer and let iTunes work its magic. As soon as you see that “synch in progress” sign appear on your iPhone, all the data that you have stored on your phone will be sent to your iTunes account. Really, that’s all there is to it.

Retrieving Your Apps

If you’re reading this article too late and you’ve already wiped out your old iPhone, there is a way to find out which apps you had on your older phone. iTunes keeps a record of all the apps that you’ve downloaded and purchased (as long as you connect to iTunes regularly). So, all you have to do is look at this record, and download those apps once again.

As soon as you log into your App Store with your existing user ID and password, your phone will note that you’ve previously paid for certain apps. During the download process, you’ll be asked if you want to download an app that you’ve already paid for. All you have to do is tap “yes,” and you’re on your way to getting all of those great apps back. If this seems really simple, that’s because it is.

Apple doesn’t mess around when it comes to helping you out, though you should make sure to backup your iPhone as often as you can. This way, you can be sure that you will never be without photos, data, or anything else that you have on your phone. You may think that your iPhone is never going to go away, but many things can happen, so make sure to synch with iTunes today!
