Dictionaries are great things. Since the first Dictionary was printed (created by Noah Webster in the 1840s), mankind has relied on these rugged texts for answers to life’s difficult spelling and definition problems. When the digital age dawned, dictionaries followed. Now, hundreds (maybe thousands?) of iPhone dictionary apps exist.

While still around, dictionaries aren’t quite what they used to be. Today’s dictionary apps come in many different forms. Some dictionaries list medical, law, and slang terms. Other dictionaries are of the foreign language sort. As with most other available apps, certain dictionary apps are simply better than others. If you’re looking for a solid dictionary app (and why wouldn’t you be?), scope out some of the following offerings.

Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary App

As you may have remembered from above, Noah Webster created the very first dictionary. So, it only makes sense that the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary app would rank high on the top of the best dictionary apps list. This app contains thousands upon thousands of definitions, and it has everything that a good Merriam-Webster Dictionary should have. Click on a hyperlink to find out more about a word, and use the search bar to find what you need.

Oxford Dictionary of English App

Right alongside the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary is the Oxford Dictionary of English app. Oxford and Merriam-Webster have been competing for some time now, but this particular Oxford app is more useful than most. Unlike a lot of other dictionaries, the Oxford Dictionary of English app is concise and pointed. You’ll find everything that you’re looking for with this app, but you won’t have to barrel through thousands of words to find it. The Oxford Dictionary of English app also includes voice pronunciations, which is always helpful when encountering a word for the first time.

Ninjawords Dictionary App

In the midst of all the Websters and Oxfords is the Ninjawords Dictionary App. While not as well known as the two giants listed above, Ninjawords does hold its own within the dictionary app world. The thing that sets this app apart from the rest is its clever interface. When using Ninjawords, you can look up many different words at once without losing previous definitions. This is a very handy way of conducting dictionary business, since you don’t have to flip back and forth between words and pages resulting in lost words and definitions. Ninjawords also includes a pronunciation guide, thesaurus, and favorites options.

Word Wander App (Available on iPad Only)

Word Wander is an intelligent app (as all apps should be). Not only does it give you the definition of a word, but it also provides you with a neat list of synonyms. In addition, you’ll find a careful break-down of a word, which is a great detail if you happen to be into the construction of words. If you have an iPad, Word Wander is worth looking into. It doesn’t contain a prestigious Oxford seal, but it is a great little word app that many people find helpful and amusing.
